Myofunctional therapy is an excellent, non-invasive treatment option for jaw pain and Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TMD), often referred to as TMJ. While many people think of TMD as a joint issue, it is primarily a muscle-related problem. The temporomandibular joint is surrounded by a complex network of muscles, and when these muscles are imbalanced, overused, or dysfunctional, they can lead to pain, clicking, and limited jaw movement.

Myofunctional therapy addresses these muscular issues by focusing on key areas:

  • Correcting Muscle Imbalances: Jaw pain often stems from an imbalance between the jaw's powerful chewing muscles (masseter and temporalis) and the weaker muscles that support the jaw and tongue.
  • Relaxing Overactive Muscles: Habits like teeth clenching and grinding (bruxism) cause the chewing muscles to be in a constant state of tension. Myofunctional therapy provides exercises that help these muscles learn to relax and release, reducing the chronic strain on the jaw joint.
  • Strengthening Weak Muscles: The therapy strengthens the orofacial muscles, especially the tongue. The tongue is the most important muscle for jaw stability. When the tongue is weak and rests on the floor of the mouth, it doesn't provide the necessary support, forcing the jaw muscles to work harder. By training the tongue to rest on the roof of the mouth, myofunctional therapy helps to stabilize the jaw and reduce the workload on the chewing muscles.
  • Retraining Dysfunctional Habits: Many TMD symptoms are caused by poor habits that we don't even realize we're doing. Myofunctional therapy helps to identify and correct these habits.
